KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Berta Paz is an Associate Professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), with academic backgrounds in physiotherapy, pedagogy, audiovisual communication, bioethics, and development cooperation. She holds a PhD in Education with a European Mention and has dedicated her academic career to the education of health professionals, the promotion of equity in healthcare, and the development of service-learning practices in higher education.

She is currently the Director of the Innovation Unit for Sustainable Development, Health and Global Justice through Service-Learning (iApS2030) and leads the ApSUIB programme since 2017. She is also a member of the Research Group on Inclusive Education and Diversity (GREID). In addition, she is currently part of the expert group of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) for the elaboration of the Self-assessment Framework for the Promotion of Active, Critical and Responsible Citizenship.

Berta plays a key role in national and international networks of service-learning, serving as President of the Spanish University Service-Learning Association and Vice-President of the European Association of Service-Learning in Higher Education.

Throughout her career, she has participated in numerous research and international cooperation projects, led training programmes, developed educational resources, and collaborated with public institutions and civil society organisations. She is also a member of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARLSCE) and the Critical Physiotherapy Network (CPN).Her work stands out for its strong commitment to social justice, civic engagement, and transformative education. Her keynote address at the BOLD event reflects this trajectory and contributes directly to the ongoing reflection on the role of higher education in preparing teachers to become critical, socially engaged professionals.
